Mee seva through post offices

13 NEW POST OFFICES TO BE OPENED IN THE STATE, INCLUDING THREE IN VIJAYAWADA REGION

India Post will start extending ‘Mee Seva’ services through 2,437 post offices in Andhra Pradesh from February 2014. The project was successfully implemented on a pilot basis in 95 post offices across the State.

Citizens can avail of the entire gamut of 177 types of services which Mee Seva centers are currently rendering, through their neighbourhood post offices from the New Year, Chief Post Master General (A.P Circle) B.V. Sudhakar announced at a press conference here on Friday.

Another significant initiative is the opening of 13 new post offices in the State including three in Vijayawada region: two in Krishna district with one at Tadigadapa and the other one in Umamaheswarapuram village in Bapulapadu mandal and at Perecherla in Guntur district.

Mr. Sudhakar said that Rs. 10,624 crore was disbursed to 1.50 crore beneficiaries of MGNREGS through their post office accounts since February 2006. Payment of wages under the Central government’s flagship scheme was being made under the Direct Benefit Transfer scheme in 14 districts in the State.

Pack post scheme

The Pack Post scheme is a facility through which customers can get their international parcels containing items as diverse as pickles and televisions, neatly packed in the post offices for charges ranging from Rs.50 to Rs.275. Professional packing of parcels has been necessitated by damages and other difficulties in delivering them. In Vijayawada region, this service is available only at Buckinghampet post office.

The Mobile Money Order Transfer and Instant Money Order services have drawn encouraging response from the customers. ‘Uttaram Vacchindi’ and ‘Meeru Meedabbu’ schemes under which customers can keep track of their transactions (both deposits and withdrawals) and business mail through mobile phones (numbers have to be registered through e-mail: appostsms@gmail.com) evoked tremendous response. These schemes are specific to Andhra Pradesh.

Director of Postal Services K. Somasundaram and Post Master General (Vijayawada region) M. Sampath were present.

RPLI

For the Rural populace of India the Department of Posts has an insurance scheme called Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI). Giving this information in written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha today, Shri Kapil Sibal, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, said that following steps have been taken to promote and popularize postal life insurance policy in the rural areas:

(i)            Rural PLI processing work has been decentralized to Divisional level:-  Bringing decision making closer to the common man thereby expediting sanction of loans, revival of lapsed policies and  maturity claims.  This allows contingent needs of the people to be met easily.

(ii)           Facilitating payment of premia through Post Offices anywhere in the country regardless of where the policy was issued without any transfer of policy being required.

(iii)         Facility for payment of premium online through www.epostoffice.gov.in.

(iv)  Opportunity to work as Rural PLI Agent:-  Providing common man, especially  Aanganwadi workers, un-employed youth, Self Help Groups, etc. with additional source of income by engaging them as Direct Agents under Rural Postal Life Insurance Scheme. Incentive structure for RPLI business has been made attractive i.e. 10% of premium in the first year and subsequently 2.5% of premium income till policy lasts.

(v)           Higher Sum Assured:-  For providing opportunity for financial security in line with increasing requirements of the people, the maximum sum assured limit has been raised  for RPLI from Rs. 3 lacs to Rs. 5 lacs.

(vi)         A Toll free number (18001805232/ 155232) has been operationalized and publicized for inquiries and grievance settlement. People from anywhere in the country can call and get their problems settled.

(vii)        Training to Rural PLI marketing staff i.e. GDS staff, Direct Agents and Departmental employees is being imparted to improve their marketing skills.

(viii)      Facility of Payment of outstanding premia of policy on installments basis.

(ix)         Technology/IT initiative:-  The technological initiatives being undertaken for Rural Postal Life Insurance are :

(a)              Development of Centralized software for improved after sales service for all RPLI customers.

(b)             Development of Web and mobile portal for customers to allow seamless issue of insurance policies and making online payments under Financial Services Integration plan of the Department.

(c)              Call centre for handling customer services.

(d)             Real time updating of premium payments.

(e)              Centralized monitoring of grievances.

(f)            Setting up of 809 Central Processing Centres (CPCs) at all Head Post Offices in the country for providing single window for handling of insurance proposals, service requests and claims for RPLI customers.

India Post diversifies to cope with changing times

Chennai: With major postal services in the world phasing out door-to-door delivery of mail, the top brass of the postal department has said the future of India Post lay with parcel delivery services.

“Australia’s postal service, for example, has more parcel deliveries than mail. In the same manner, if our e-commerce picks up, most of the people will make use of India Post (IP) since we are the only players to have the widest possible network, and IP will still have a chance to stay alive,” said Mervin Alexander, post master general, Chennai circle.

The department is, however, constantly engaging with people through its philatelic activities and special initiatives, like ‘My Stamp’, of which it has sold over 5,000 models. “We are aware of the fact that letters will start to dwindle in the coming decades. However, we have already started to diversify our services. We are going to introduce core banking very soon,” said Mervin Alexander.

The philatelic activities of the department continue to find takers. “Stamp collection will help one develop patience and skill, those are the major benefits. The collection of stamps and putting them together needs a lot of skill; there is also great scope for learning about other countries,” said Dr S.S. Sukumar, former state president, Indian Medical Association.

The department personnel claim that as many as 60 lakh letters and greeting cards are delivered during New Year and Christmas.
“I still preserve my father’s letters which become precious after some years. The youth, these days, do not know what they are missing because they were never in that era. My brother has written long letters to us, scolding us; it brings back a fragment of memory when one re-reads it today.

E-mail pinging does not give the feel of a handwritten letter. We have lost our writing and reading habit over a period of time,” said Dr Sujatha Priya, faculty of English at Anna University in Chennai.

commemorative stamp on ekalavya

Ekalavya is a character from the Hindu epic, the Mahabharata. He was a young prince of the Nishadha, a confederation of jungle tribes in Ancient India. Ekalavya aspired to study archery in the gurukul of Guru Dronacharya, the greatest known teacher in the use of weaponry and martial art knowledge at the time. He was son of Vyatraj Hiranyadhanus, a talented soldier in the army of King of Magadha. Magadha was ruled by Jarasandha, who was at odds with the Kingdom of Hastinapura. Ekalavya sincerely sought the mentor of Dronacharya in weaponry and martial art. Ekalavya is called as one of the foremost of kings in the Rajasuya Yagna where he honours Yudhishthira with his shoes. Though he didn't have his right thumb, he was noted as a very powerful archer and charioteer..
India Post issued a commemorative stamp on Eklavya on 27th December 2013.
